Talking Heads Animation Workshop at the new Birmingham Library

Birmingham Metropolitan College Outline Art and Design Department invited the people of Birmingham to participate in the City of 1000 Stories project in the new Birmingham Library.

Birmingham is a rich and diverse collection of stories which are being explored through the visual arts in this exciting initiative. The stories are told through words and images using simple mark-making drawing and silhouette animation techniques which can produce a piece of animation that shows words and images appearing to move and tell a story.

Working live and watched by members of the public from midday until early evening the group improvised a giant composition of aspects of Birmingham.

Well done to the "Engage and Exhibit" group.

Workshop at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for the Friends Open Evening

A group of first year students from Subsidiary Diploma at a workshop to support the Friends of BMAG in instigating a series of open evenings where the museum stays open until nine o'clock during the summer months. The students worked on a version of "project in a night" choosing an object from the history galleries and developing a series of studies.

Taking over the galleries for a group critique at the end of the evening. Obviously each object had a story to tell about the history of Birmingham and the students were encouraged to pick one that had a significance for them personally.

Birmingham Childrens Hospital Event

The 1000 stories team in action at the Children's Hospital delivering a version of the flying pages book of Birmingham.
We were invited by Sandhu Amrit from the corporate nursing team “play and activities” Department. During the two days she helped us get the children in the outpatients department telling their stories through making drawings, tracings and rubbings.
We were joined for a short session each day by students from the James Brindley School who enjoyed learning some traditional drawing skills as well as a fun animated silhouette activity.

Further stories - Yellow Week

The recent yellow week for our Subsidiary Diploma in Art and Design centred on the theme of the rich variety of fruit and vegetables now available in the area due to the diversity of the ethnic mix in the region. Just one of the thousand stories that Birmingham generates. Above you can see a short film which captures the week-long activities.

Project in a Night displayed as the Flying Pages

Project in a night involves the production of a series of drawings developing an idea or theme in a short space of time. This sequential development is naturally suited to the flying pages method of display

Seen here displayed in the Outline Department itself ,this presentational format  is becoming extremely popular and generated a lot of interest from members of the public and colleagues.
